The residents and staff from Shaws Wood and Lennox Wood recently celebrated being the winners of the competition to name the Avante Partnership's new care home being built in Chatham.
The £8 million development is on the site of the former Churchlands care home in Palmerston Road, Chatham. The new 112 bedroom care home will replace the services currently being run at Shaws Wood and Lennox Wood, and a competition was held to find a new name for the home. Over 30 entries were received and the winning idea came from the residents of Shaws Wood, who suggested Amherst Court.
Tracey Jones, Avante's Director of Property and Business Development, who presented the champagne to resident Amy Tiplady said 'It is important to recognise the home's connections to the Medway towns, and Chatham in particular. The name of Amherst is well known to local people, due to the historic Fort Amherst, and we will be choosing recognisable names for the suites in the home, to commemorate the ships which were built in the Chatham Dockyard.’
The home is currently being built by Kent builders, Denne Construction, and has been designed by Clague Architects. It is expected that the residents will move into their new home in September next year.
